There are moments in our lives that stand out, moments that define us, moments that shape our stories and moments we want to hold onto forever.
A wedding is one of those moments.
It is a day filled with love, laughter and at times, tears. It is a day filled with singular moments leading you to one of the most important moments of your life.
Choosing the right photographer to be a part of those moments is a critical part of the wedding planning process. You want someone who can blend into the background but be close enough to catch the tenderness and emotion of the moment. You need someone who knows what you want and will give it to you and you want to know what your end result will look like.
There are a number of important factors to consider when choosing the photographer and person you are trusting with your story.
Here are a few tips to consider;
First, you want to look at websites and portfolios to see a photographer’s styling. What do their pictures say about the people they are photographing? Do you want pretty pictures, glamorous lighting, filter effects or do you want someone who is following the timeline, telling your story from beginning to end and filling in the blanks with snapshots of all the minute but important details you have been slaving over for months?
Second, when you look at a photographer’s past projects, are you seeing consistency? Does the photographer have a specific style they use? Do you see a timeline? Are their photos unique but similar? Consistency is important because it tells you this photographer has a plan, knows what they are looking for but is customizing each photo to the clients.
Third, and probably most important, speak with the photographers. Get a feel for their personality, what they have to offer in the way of direction and build a bond.
On a day when time seems to fly by and emotions are on overload, the last thing you want to worry about is making sure your photographer is catching every moment. You want to enjoy your day, take in as much as you possibly can and trust that in 20 years you will have a beautifully put together story, full of timeless photographs to look back on.
Planning a wedding budget is always a priority, however, there are some things that are worth a little extra and a photographer is one of them. Each photographer has their own style, talent level and vision. It is important to find a photographer that clicks with you and is willing to work with your vision.
As hard as we try, moments eventually become memories and although we can’t go back in time, a timeless photograph can bring a moment back to you.
